Cell Groups Contrasted with Other Types of Home Groups
While there are benefits found from participation in most types of home groups, Cell Groups are unique. Different things happen at a Cell Group meeting than at other home group meetings. Here are some comparisons:
Bible Study Groups
Bible study groups are just that. In these groups people come together to do in-depth study of the Bible. These meetings are designed primarily for teaching. Biblical doctrine is learned through the spiritual discipline of study for the purpose of revealing God, presenting a specific topic, or attempting to help Christians grow to a higher level of maturity through learning information. Sometimes Bible study groups move beyond study to include prayer or other activities but the majority of time is used for Bible study.
Small Groups
While there are many different types of "small groups" most focus primarily on the edification (building up) of its members. Many of these groups focus the majority of their time together studying and discussing a specific topic like marriage, parenting, Bible prophecy, or other topics. Research and experience tell us that most small groups function for a maximum of 12 to 18 months. This is because the group’s purpose is usually accomplished in this period of time. It is likely that members of small groups will eventually join up with another group in the future when they discover one that is of interest to them.
Cell Groups
Cell groups get their name from biological cells, which grow and multiply in order to maintain life. Cells are open, evangelism-focused groups. They meet weekly to build up (edify) each other as members of the Body of Christ, but they also focus outwardly in order to spread the gospel to those who don’t know Jesus. The ultimate goal of each cell is to multiply itself as the group grows through the evangelistic ministry of its members. Cell members are free to share what is happening in their lives without fear of judgment or gossip. Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, cell members minister to each other and receive freedom from strongholds, healing, unconditional love, and hope.
4 Activities of a LIFE Group Gathering
Welcome Time - Us to Each Other
A simple ice breaker question that everyone can answer is asked during welcome time. This brings focus to the group and helps us get to know each other better.
Worship Time - Us to God
During worship time the group focuses on God and thanks him for the great things he is doing in our lives.
Word Time – God to Us
The first half of word time is designed to take the teaching from the previous weekend’s presentation and apply it to our lives. The second half is a time of sharing, prayer, and edification when cell group members minister to each other through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Witness Time – Us to the World
During witness time cell members plan outreach events and report on what Christ is doing in their friends' lives. This time is often used to pray specifically for friends who are not yet benefiting from the abundant life God offers
